Sculpting Body Ideals Summary

The article "Sculpting Body Ideals: Alison Lapper Pregnant and the Public Display of Disability by Ann Millett-Galant explores the significances
and controversies behind the display of the Alison Lapper Pregnant statue in Trafalgar Square. Ann states that the naked depiction of Alison Lapper's
disabled body through this sculpture has posed many questions to the public viewers. Many people question the intentions of the artist to display the
naked, pregnant body of Lapper. Some critics believe that the nudity was something to provide shock value to the sculpture, and others question from a
feministic point of view whether Lapper's pregnancy is meant to justify her being. Ann goes on to explain how the Alison Lapper Pregnant sculpture
displays Lapper in a heroic fashion, and challenges the public to view her disabled body and the artistic body in a new way. The sculpture challenges old artistic interpretations of the ideal human body, and stereotypical views of society about the disabled body. Through Lapper's display in Trafalgar Square her heroic view is further emphasized. Ann states that regardless of the questions about the sculptures display in Trafalgar Square it really a fitting place to have the sculpture shown to the public. With the Greek Hellenistic nature of the sculpture it fits in with the other artwork of the Square, and really give the people a chance to view the disabled body as a figure to admire. Ann defines Lapper's role in the making of the sculpture very well. Lapper did not feel exploited in the least by being displayed naked or pregnant and is fully comfortable in her own disabled skin. Lapper also saw the sculpture as a chance to challenge stereotypes, and give the world a new perspective. The beauty of the Alison Lapper Pregnant sculpture should be recognized by all, and is a chance for all to gain a new understanding of the disabled community.
